Before you e-file 990-N, here is the list of information you need.
Tax1099 is designed for tax professionals who handle multiple clients and filings.
IRS Form 990-N, or e-postcard, is an electronic notice that tax-exempt organizations with less than $50,000 in annual gross receipts must file in place of Form 990 or 990-EZ.
Organizations can file Form 990-N if their annual gross receipts are $50,000 or less, but there are exceptions. Newly formed nonprofits have slightly higher thresholds in their first two years, up to $75,000 in year one and $60,000 in year two, before reverting to the $50,000 limit. However, certain entities like private foundations, political organizations, and some supporting organizations cannot use 990-N regardless of revenue, and churches or their integrated auxiliaries are generally exempt from filing altogether.
The deadline to file Form 990-N is the 15th day of the 5th month after the close of the organization’s tax year (either calendar or fiscal year). If the due date falls on a weekend or holiday, it automatically moves to the next working day.
No, you cannot file an extension for Form 990-N. It has to be filed within the deadline.
There is no immediate penalty for late filing of Form 990-N. However, if you fail to file for three consecutive years, your organization will lose its exemption status.
Once you submit Form 990-N to the IRS, it cannot be amended. You must make the corrections in next year’s filings.
Yes, an organization that is eligible to submit Form 990-N can file Form 990 or Form 990-EZ if it elects/chooses to.
If your organization is eligible to file Form 990-N but did not file for three consecutive years, your tax-exempt status will be revoked.
The IRS may take up to a few days to process your Form 990-N filings. You can track the status of your filing via our dashboard.
