IRS Form 1099-NEC is an addition to the 1099 information filing series. The form was reintroduced in the 2020 tax year, enabling taxpayers to report non-employee compensations independently.
For tax year 2026, Form 1099-NEC includes a major federal reporting threshold change. Nonemployee compensation is generally reportable when payments total $2,000 or more, increased from the prior $600 threshold. Form 1099-NEC may still be required below $2,000 when backup withholding applies.

If you’re reporting payments made to independent contractors or freelancers, then you must furnish the TIN information of the vendor as well. To obtain the TIN details from the vendor, you can send out a W-9 Form and validate the TIN with IRS TIN Matching prior to filing.
The IRS assesses late filing penalties on taxpayers when it doesn’t receive the tax files by the prescribed due dates. Currently, the late filing penalty starts at $60 per form and goes up to $340 per form depending on the delay in filing your returns. To prevent being penalized, you can eFile before the deadline.
