One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) increased Form 1099-MISC threshold from $600 to $2,000 for the 2026 tax year, for rent, prizes/awards, medical and health care payments, and crop insurance proceeds. Royalties, substitute payments, attorney proceeds, fish purchases, fishing boat proceeds, direct sales, and backup withholding still follow the old reporting rules.
Have you missed a tax deadline recently? Penalties can add up with every missed deadline. If you’ve made any type of miscellaneous payments, such as rent, royalties, or prizes, to individuals, then as a payer you are required to file Form 1099-MISC.
With fines starting at $60 per form and escalating the longer you delay, businesses simply cannot afford to take that risk. Staying on top of these deadlines is important not only to avoid hefty penalties but also to maintain full IRS compliance.
In this guide, let’s understand the exact Form 1099-MISC deadlines for TY 2026 and show you how to file with ease.
Form 1099-MISC is filed by U.S. taxpayers to report non-wage payments made at the time of trading or while performing core business which are not reportable in other 1099 categories.
Payers should apply the correct Form 1099-MISC threshold by payment type. For TY 2026, the threshold is $2,000 for categories such as rents, certain other income/prizes/awards, medical and health care payments, and crop insurance proceeds. Royalties and substitute payments in lieu of dividends or tax-exempt interest have a threshold of $10, while resale of consumer goods can be reported if it’s $5,000 or more. Gross proceeds paid to an attorney and cash payments for fish purchased for resale has a minimum reporting threshold of $600 or more.
The different types of boxes that can be selected in the form include:
There are different Form 1099-MISC due dates depending on the type of filing method:
Use Form 8809 only when you need more time to file Copy A with the IRS. If you need more time to furnish recipient statements, request that separately using Form 15397 before the furnishing deadline.
Do not assume an IRS filing extension gives extra time to send Copy B. If recipient delivery is already late, furnish the copy as soon as possible, keep proof of delivery, and file the IRS copy by the applicable deadline.
To simplify tax filing for multiple states, the IRS Combined Federal/State Filing (CF/SF) program shares accepted e-filed Copy A data with participating states.
However, state Form 1099-MISC thresholds and direct-filing rules may differ from federal rules, including the OBBBA threshold changes for the 2026 tax year. Confirm each state’s filing threshold, due date, and direct-filing requirements before relying on CF/SF alone.
In case the due date of form submission falls on a federal holiday or a weekend, then the form submission deadline will automatically move to the next working day. The scenario is applicable to both the recipient and the IRS filing deadlines.
Penalties for late state filing: The penalties for late submissions for state differs from state to state. Some states impose per-form penalties, while others assess penalties based on unpaid withholding tax, late payment, or willful failure to file. Always confirm the applicable state’s penalty rules before filing to avoid heavy fines.
The state compliance engine of Tax1099 can automatically identify and flag non-compliance to CF/SF jurisdictions, assign and manage extra form submissions, and store the separate ‘Accepted’ receipts, thus eliminating the need to manually sift through more than 50 rule sets by the payer.
The IRS imposes penalties for late form filing on a per‑form basis. The late penalties for the returns that are due in 2027 (TY 2026) are:
Filing Status
For cases where the payer has submitted both the Copies late (Copy A 90 (IRS) and Copy B (Recipient)), the penalties will be applied double.
Before the payer starts filing the form, they should collect all the necessary information to avoid refiling in case of errors and paying for 1099-MISC penalties:
1: The payer can either create a new Tax1099 account for free or sign in to an existing one.
2: Collect or Import payee data via CSV upload, API, or through direct integration with QuickBooks®, Xero®, etc.
3: Perform a quick run to validate TINs with the built‑in TIN Matching in order to avoid any TIN errors and notices.
4: The system will auto‑populate Form 1099‑MISC boxes based on your imported data.
5: If you want to submit an e-file, select the e‑file service level. You can select federal only for submitting the form directly to the IRS, or federal + state + recipient for IRS filing, state jurisdiction reporting, and distribution of recipient copies via mail or e‑delivery.
6: Finally, you can submit or transmit the form to the IRS & states. You will receive a real-time notification regarding the status of your form as ‘Accepted/Rejected’.
7: If you want to deliver recipient copies, you can either do that by using the email portal or via USPS print‑and‑mail services. You can track the deliveries of the copies through the dashboard.
8: If a correction is needed, file the corrected Form 1099-MISC through the applicable IRS filing channel. Correction workflows should use IRIS, since FIRE will not accept current-year, prior-year, or correction submissions after it is shutdown.
By filing forms through the automated Tax1099 solution, the payers can ensure their compliance workflows remain fully aligned with every deadline (whether it’s IRS or a state due date). It can also minimize the chances of errors and delays resulting in penalties.
