The Form 1099-NEC filing deadline for 2027 is February 1 for both IRS filing and recipient copies. The regular January 31 deadline falls on a Sunday, moving the due date to the next business day.
Businesses reporting qualifying nonemployee payments made in 2026 must meet this deadline to avoid potential late-filing penalties.
Form 1099-NEC does not receive a later federal filing date simply because it is filed electronically.
The IRS lists January 31 as the standard deadline for both IRS filing and recipient statements.
Weekend and legal-holiday rules shift the actual 2027 date to February 1.
The Form 1099-NEC recipient copy due date for 2027 is February 1, 2027, for reportable payments made during 2026.
Before sending recipient statements, review the recipient's legal name, TIN, mailing address, reportable payment amount, and federal income tax withheld when applicable.
Starting this review early gives you more time to resolve missing W-9 information or incorrect recipient details before the filing deadline.
The IRS filing deadline for Form 1099-NEC is also February 1, 2027. The same date applies to electronic filing and permitted paper filing.
This differs from Form 1099-MISC, which generally has later IRS filing dates.
IRS Publication 1099 confirms the January 31 standard deadline for Form 1099-NEC, while Form 1099-MISC generally uses the last day of February for paper filing and March 31 for electronic filing.
The 2026 Form 1099-NEC includes several important changes.
Excess golden parachute payments also move from Form 1099-MISC to Box 3 of Form 1099-NEC. The 2026 Form 1099-NEC also separates payer and recipient address information into more specific fields.
For payments made during 2026, qualifying nonemployee compensation generally becomes reportable at $2,000 or more, replacing the previous $600 threshold.
The $2,000 threshold applies to qualifying services performed by nonemployees and qualifying attorney payments. The threshold is subject to inflation adjustments beginning in 2027.
Form 1099-NEC can still be required below $2,000 when federal income tax was withheld under backup-withholding rules.
Common recipients can include independent contractors, freelancers, consultants, professional service providers, and attorneys receiving qualifying legal-service payments.
Businesses required to file 10 or more covered information returns in aggregate generally must file electronically.
The 10-return test applies across information-return types rather than separately to each form. For example, a filer with several Forms 1098 plus enough Forms 1099 to reach 10 total generally falls under the electronic-filing requirement.
The 1099-NEC eFile deadline for 2027 remains February 1, 2027.
Businesses that previously used FIRE need to prepare for a major filing-system change.
The IRS is retiring FIRE before the 2027 filing season. Tax-year 2026 information returns previously handled through FIRE must instead be filed through the Information Returns Intake System (IRIS).
IRIS supports both a Taxpayer Portal and an Application-to-Application channel for larger electronic filing operations.
Late or incorrect information returns can lead to penalties. For returns required to be filed in 2027, the amounts are:
The intentional-disregard penalty has no maximum. Separate penalties can also apply when required recipient statements are not furnished correctly or on time.
Tax1099 helps businesses import filing data and run TIN matching to prepare Form 1099-NEC. The platform also helps businesses eFile supported federal and state returns, deliver recipient copies, track filing status, and manage rejected or corrected forms in one place.
Both the recipient statement and IRS filing, whether efiling or on paper, are due February 1, 2027 for 2026 payments.
The recipient statement is generally due February 1, 2027.
The electronic filing deadline is February 1, 2027, the same as the deadline for permitted paper filings.
Qualifying nonemployee compensation generally uses a $2,000 threshold for payments made during 2026.
Businesses must use IRIS instead of FIRE to electronically file the 1099 forms previously filed through FIRE for eFiling 1099 forms in 2027.
Tax1099 helps you validate recipient information, prepare Form 1099-NEC, eFile returns, deliver recipient copies, and track filing status through one organized filing workflow.
