Instructions to File 1099-MISC for 2024 Tax Year

1099-MISC Instructions—Box by Box

Box 1: Rents

If someone pays you rent for office space, machinery, farmland, or pasture, you would report that figure in Box 1. Only amounts of $600 or more are required to be reported.

Box 2: Royalties

Box 2 is for reporting any royalties you received of $10 or more. Royalties generally cover license fees for copyrights, patents, and trademarks.

Box 3: Other income

In Box 3, include any other income of $600 or more which cannot be reported in any of the other boxes on the form.

Box 4: Federal income tax withheld

If you withheld taxes for a person who has not furnished a taxpayer identification number or who is subject to backup withholding, report this figure here.

Box 7: Payer made direct sales of $5,000 or more

This box is checked if the payer sold goods totaling $5,000 or more to the recipient for resale, on a buy-sell, deposit-commission, or other basis.

Box 8: Substitute payments in lieu of dividends or interest.

This box reports payments received instead of dividends or interest, typically from a broker when securities are loaned out.

Box 9: Crop insurance proceeds.

It shows the amount of crop insurance proceeds paid to farmers by insurance companies due to crop damage or loss.

Box 10: Gross proceeds paid to an attorney

This box reflects the total amount paid to an attorney for legal services, typically in conMISCtion with a legal settlement.

Box 12: Section 409A deferrals

This box reports amounts deferred under a nonqualified deferred compensation plan that are subject to Section 409A of the Internal Revenue Code.

Box 14: Nonqualified deferred compensation

indicates the total amount of nonqualified deferred compensation that is included in the recipient’s income.

Different Copies of Form 1099-MISC

Form 1099-MISC, used for reporting miscellaneous income, has several copies, each serving a different purpose:

  • Copy A: Sent to the IRS.
  • Copy 1: Sent to the recipient’s state tax department.
  • Copy B: Sent to the recipient.
  • Copy 2: Sent to the recipient for their state tax return.
  • Copy C: Retained by the payer for record-keeping.

How to file 1099-MISC?

Step-by-step instructions to eFile IRS Form 1099-MISC

Step 1:

Log in to Tax1099 and click Create Form.

Select the Tax Year and Form 1099-MISC.

Step 2:

You'll now see the 1099-MISC form with four main sections: Payer, Recipient, Federal, and State Filing Details.

Step 3:

Now let’s Add Payer Details.

If the payer is already added, click Select and choose from the existing list of payers. To add a new payer, click Add and select Individual or Business.

  • For individuals: Provide their name, SSN, contact, and address.
  • For businesses: Enter the Business Name, EIN, contact, and address. Click Submit once all details are entered. The payer details will now appear on the form.

Step 4:

The next step is to Add Recipient Details Similarly, if the recipient is already added, click Select and choose from the list. To add a new recipient, click Add and choose Individual or Business.

  • For individuals: Provide their name, SSN, contact, and address.
  • For businesses: Enter the Business Name, EIN, contact, and address. Click Submit to save the recipient details to the form.

Step 5:

Once you have added the payer and recipient details, Enter the miscellaneous Payments and any federal or state tax withheld.

Step 6:

After filling the form click next and view added form.

  • Select USPS Mail or eDelivery to send recipient copies. eDelivery is enabled only if the recipient's email ID is provided. A consent request is sent to the recipient , and once approved, the recipient can access their copy.
  • Select TIN Match to avoid costly IRS penalties
  • Opt for State Filing if required.

Note: State Filing option will be enabled and you can select it only when state filing is required for that particular state. In this case, State filing is not required for this particular state so we can’t select the checkbox for state filing.

Step 7:

Finally, click Action, then Submit Form Now, and proceed with Pay Now to file your form to the IRS. Now your form has been successfully submitted to the IRS.

Step 8:

After submission, navigate to Manage Forms to view and download the recipient copy in PDF format.
